Dillenburg – cradle of the Dutch royal house
William I of Orange was born in Dillenburg in 1533 – and the town is shaped by the legacy of the House of Orange to this day. Its landmark is the Wilhelmsturm tower with the Orange-Nassau museum. Below it lie the casemates: underground fortifications that rank among the largest of the early modern era in Western Europe.

Herborn – the Middle Ages up close
Herborn’s old town is one of the best-preserved medieval townscapes in Germany: narrow lanes, hundreds of half-timbered houses, the Hohe Schule with the town museum, the castle above the town and the old fortifications with their towers.
Practical: Herborn has a railway station with connections towards Gießen/Frankfurt – ideal if you plan a day out without the car. Tip: Dillenburg and Herborn are only a few kilometres apart – both towns combine beautifully into a single day trip.
